Getting to know our Private Client team… Meet Akeem Bolaji, Tax Consultant
We want you to get to know our Private Client team, who work together to determine our clients’ financial position and help them to understand the financial and tax implications of every decision.
In today’s episode, meet Akeem Bolaji, our Tax Consultant…
How long have you worked at MHA Tait Walker and what is your role in the team?
I have worked at MHA Tait Walker since July 2019, so just over a year.
I am a Tax Consultant on the Private Client tax team and my main role on the team involves the reviewing of tax returns for junior members. In addition, I assist the wider tax team on advisory type projects. This can range from inheritance tax issues to HMRC enquiries.
Alongside this, I also work closely with our Wealth Management team to discuss clients’ wealth and personal perspectives to see whether we can maximise any reliefs and see how everything interacts together, as any investment issues may impact the personal tax position, and vice versa.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day involves checking emails, preparing for and attending client meetings and working on various advisory projects, which often involve multiple tax considerations, not just private client tax.
Following the end of the tax return submission cycle, a majority of the time was spent discussing with clients ways to maximise any tax reliefs before the end of the tax year. Again, this involves linking up with the Wealth Management team to see whether any reliefs or allowances can be utilised for the client’s benefits. Now that the next tax return cycle is in full swing, I spend the majority of my day reviewing tax returns before these are issued to clients and dealing with ad hoc queries as and when they arise.
What kind of clients do you work with?
I work with a variety of clients. A majority of clients are directors of owner managed business and high net worth individuals with lots of wealth and numerous business interests. In addition, I also work with sole traders and partnerships. No two clients are the same.
Why do you like helping clients to achieve their goals?
I really enjoy helping people, and I enjoy guiding clients to solve any problems that they could not do on their own. I get a really buzz in identifying, guiding and solving client issues to put their minds at ease.
A little about you. What’s your favourite thing about the North East?
I’m originally from Grimsby, so one thing I miss about home are fish and chips! Fish and chips in the North East are not too far behind. As well as this, I love how friendly the North East is. It is true that Geordies are the friendliest people you will meet!
