Getting to know our Private Client team… Meet Dorothy Johnston, Tax Manager
How long have you worked at MHA Tait Walker and what’s your role in the team?
I’m a Chartered Tax Advisor and first started working at MHA Tait Walker in 1988. I am a manager in the Private Client team, dealing with tax compliance issues and one-off advisory work.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day involves dealing with queries from clients, working on tax returns and reviewing work of the rest of the private client team. Sometimes the day is spent working on projects that involve the whole of the tax team and it is always interesting to become involved in larger pieces of work.
What kind of clients do you work with?
I deal with tax returns for individuals, sole traders, partnerships and trusts. Some clients also need advice on inheritance tax issues, whether that is planning to mitigate their own future liability or dealing with Inheritance Tax Returns when someone has died.
Why do you like helping clients to achieve their goals?
Nobody likes to pay tax and sometimes it is unavoidable. But sometimes, a bit of forward thinking and planning can make a big difference and it is rewarding to be able to provide much better news than was expected.
A little about you. What’s your favourite thing about the North East?
I am originally from Scotland but have lived in the North East for many years, so I now view it as home. There is something here for everyone – shopping, nightlife, theatre and countryside, so we are spoilt for choice!
